Qualification to laser vision correction

Qualification based on brief checking

Qualifications for the laser vision correction procedure begin with a brief checking the patient’s medical history. Responses to the questions contained in qualifying form about: age, stabilisation of visual impairment, types and capacities of contact lenses and spectacle lenses, diseases allow to pre-evaluate the possibility of performance of a laser vision correction procedure.

Qualification based on history does not require a visit to MAVIT MC. You simply need to the qualification form at the MAVIT MC website or contact the MAVIT MC Call Centre at +48 22 569 59 00.

Qualification based on full examinations

The possibility of the use of the laser vision correction is ultimately decided by a specialist physician at MAVIT MC after a detailed qualifying examination, at the stage of detailed ophthalmic examinations. The physician determines the visual impairment, evaluates visual acuity, alignment of the eye balls, diameter of the pupil. He examines in detail the cornea (its thickness and curvature), the lens, and fundus of the eye.

Full examinations

We offer our patients two forms of performance of full qualifying examinations for the laser vision correction.

The qualifying examination may be performed in one day, then it takes 3–4 hours, it is necessary to remove soft lenses (2–3 weeks before the examination) and hard lenses (3–4 weeks before the examination). During the qualifications there are estimated the size of impairment (with dilated pupils), corneal thickness, pupils’ width, there is also evaluated fundus of the eye. At this stage, specialist in eye diseases determines whether the patient qualifies for laser vision correction procedure.

The second form is dividing the qualifying examination into two stages, wherein each stage takes place on a different day.

Stage 1 – non-contact examination – does not require preparation. The lenses may be removed one day prior to examining. There are evaluated the size of impairment, the shape of the cornea, its thickness, the pupils’ width in the dark. There is also performed an examination in a slit lamp, which allows to exclude abnormalities regarding the anterior segment of the eye. At this stage the patient is pre-qualified for the laser vision correction procedure, but it is still necessary to perform further, detailed examinations.

Stage 2 – the full examination – lasting 2 to 3 hours, requiring the dilated pupils, in order to ultimately evaluate the size of the eye impairment. During the examination there is evaluated the fundus of the eye exclude any pathologies (it is necessary to remove soft lenses for a minimum of 2-3 weeks prior the examination and hard lenses for a minimum of 3-4 weeks prior to the examination).

Full and profound evaluation of the examination results allows to qualify the patient for refractive surgery and guarantees a safe performance of the procedure.

After successful completion of the qualifying examination a conversation with the patient takes places, during which the physician explains what are the various methods of vision correction and determines with the patient the best method (in its choice the physician follows the eye anatomy – especially the thickness of the cornea and lifestyle of a candidate for laser correction).

The physician has a choice of superficial methods and deep methods. For example, if the patient’s profession is associated with exposure of the eye to injuries (special services, athletes, etc.), a superficial method procedure, e.g. EBK™, will be recommended.
